The Destination: Ricketts Glen in the fall! Over 20 named waterfalls to discover and photograph while learning techniques from 2 instructors in a very intimate class size. The main attraction is the “Falls Trail” which we will fully cover in the 2 days, rain or shine. Old growth timber and diverse wildlife add to the scenic area. Ricketts Glen State Park is one of the most beautiful areas in Pennsylvania, especially in the fall with autumn foliage.
Curriculum: Using the natural beauty of Ricketts Glen, the instructors will break the class into 2 groups of three and spend a full day with each group teaching their individual styles which will include a variety of techniques that will allow you to advance both your technical skills and artistic vision. We will focus on a number of professional field techniques to help you create incredible nature images, including working with dramatic light; the fundamentals of powerful compositions; and abstract techniques for creating artistic photographs. Whenever there is “down time” during the middle of the day when the light is not conducive to making good images, we will have lunch, answer any questions, and review what we have covered along the trail. When we get back to the cabin, Glenn will demonstrate his workflow and a number of techniques in Adobe Lightroom to take your images to their fullest potential.
Our main focus, however, will be on field techniques and making great images. We plan to be in the field as much as possible (when the light is conducive).
Day 1: We will meet at 8am for a one hour introductory presentation at the cabin. Then we will hit the trail, splitting our group of six into groups of three with an instructor and start shooting the falls on the two separate forks that make up the trail. We will break when the light is not ideal and talk about techniques and review what we have done during the morning while eating lunch on the trail. After lunch we will continue until the light is gone and hike back to the cabin for the evening, allowing participants to get dinner. After dinner we will review and critique the day and Glenn will go over his basic workflow in Lightroom. Then… if weather allows, we will go to the Lake Jean shoreline for some night photography as it is close to the New Moon, with a bonus lesson.
Day 2: We will start early and get right onto the trail at 7am switching instructors and go down the second fork of the trail. After a midday break for lunch, we will continue shooting until the evening and meet to close out the workshop.
Lodging: Workshop participants are invited to stay at an 8-person cabin that will serve as our meeting place. The rooms are bunk style and you would have to provide your own bedding (sleeping bag – pillows). The cabin has running water, a shower, kitchen and living area. There will be hot food on the first night or you can venture out and find something to eat locally. Although we will use our lodge as our base of operations, you are welcome to stay somewhere else nearby if you wish. There are several campgrounds in the immediate area, but hotels are quite far from this remote park location.
Physical requirements: This is an outdoor nature photo workshop, so general good health and fitness will help maximize your comfort and enjoyment. That said, the activities we have planned should be well within the ability of people in moderate to good shape. Hiking will be over moderate to steep terrain. When working along the waterfalls, trails can sometimes be unstable and slippery, so a good sense of balance will come in handy. All participants Will be required to sign a standard release and waiver form.
What’s included: Tuition covers guiding, instruction and lodging (in cabin). Transportation, meals, and all other costs are the responsibility of workshop participants.
Tuition and cancellation policy: 50% deposit is due upon registration. A full refund minus a $100 processing fee is available if you cancel within 60 days before the workshop starts. Within 60 days, we will only issue a refund if we can fill your spot.
